Sunrise Birding’s first wildlife cruise in the Peruvian Amazon explored the Río Amazon, the Río Ucayali, the Río Marañon, and various tributaries from very comfortable accommodation aboard the Amazon Star. We traveled 680 miles on the Amazon Star and an additional 180 miles on the smaller skiffs exploring tributaries and river islands for the region’s special birds. With the help of the ship’s expedition staff and the expertise of Steve Bird and Diego Calderon, we found a good selection of Neotropical bird species and mammals including several species of primate and Pink and Gray River Dolphins. The outstanding crew of the ship took care of everything for us from delicious meals, picnics in the field, cold drinks all the time, and cold towels to refresh us in the field and when we came back from excursions on the smaller boats. In the evening, the same crew entertained us during happy hour with a new band every night and the battle of the bands on the last night. We also enjoyed visits to some local villages along the river with the chance to learn about the local culture, interact with local people including school children and buy some local crafts. The experience of cruising the Amazon is extraordinary and unforgettable and we look forward to bringing more groups in the future.
